The University of Greenwich is a public university located in London and Kent, United Kingdom. Within ValgOrize the Algal Biotechnology team addresses algal biotechnology and bioenergy, with algae cultivation facilities and expertise in proteomics and metabolomics. Expertise lies in screening, developing and cultivating strains of microalgae (lab scale), optimising metabolomic pathways for desired trits and developing industrial schemes for processing macro- and micro-algal biomass for pigments, antioxidants, polysaccharides lipids and feed in algae biorefinery.

The Greenwich team is working on scaling up production of the alga under red lights in the Greenwich pilot, to produce a powder with an ideal taste profile, balanced amino acid composition and optimal content of 9-cis beta-carotene to add as a new food supplement for European markets and to develop a new line of nutricosmetics.

The team decided to work on Dunaliella first for a number of reasons, which are elaborated on in this Research Update article.
